Demonstrator Biographies
2009/2010 Season:
September 3, 2009 – Steve Zazenski
www.stevezazenski.com

Steve Zazenski will give a
demonstration using watercolors. Many of Steve’s paintings use vibrant
colors which are placed next to each other and provide the viewer with sharp
and inviting contrasts of color and form. His subject matter is mainly
inspired by the landscapes of New England, Bucks County, and the surrounding
regions. Recent travels to Europe and the U.K. are the source of some of
his recent work. He shows widely in galleries and is in many private and
public collections internationally and throughout the United States.
Steve Zazenski, of Bucks County,
received his BFA from the New York Institute of Technology and has been a
full time artist since 1978. He is known primarily for his traditional
landscapes, through which he has developed a series of classes and workshops
entitled: “A logical Approach to Watercolor”.
Having personally attended several of
his classes, I can attest to his down-to-earth and easy-to-understand
teaching methods. His demonstration will be appropriate for beginners and
for advanced artists.

portraits and animal portraits. She has given
many workshops and demonstrations in watercolor, acrylic, ink and collage
throughout the Northwest New Jersey area.

May 6 - Alice Harrison and
Susan G. Hammond
www.artpresspublishing.com
AAR Members and
Co-Authors of the book, “Artists’ Guidebook to a New Creative Life – Produce,
Exhibit and Sell Artwork" will present a PowerPoint presentation and discussion
of their book.

artwork widely in galleries, colleges, museums and other

But,
their presentation will not be about their artwork.

being an artist. Some of the topics they will be
covering are:
How
to:
-
manage your time and stay focused on your projects
-
organize your studio space
-
promote yourself, i.e. brochures, resumes, press
releases, websites
- get
into galleries and juried shows
-
network and make yourself known

of their presentation will be from their current book, “Artists’

critiques are always very informative and fun.

After the war he attended New York University and studied fine art
education. He continued his studies at Columbia University and Rutgers

as Professor of Art at Kean University from 1961 until his retirement in
1993.

seriousness. Currently, Burger’s work can be seen at the Coryell Gallery in
Lambertville and the Riverbank Art Gallery in Stockton. Also look for his
upcoming retrospective at the Trenton Museum.

Oct 7, 2010 -
Julie Friedman

www.juliefriedmanart.com/
Julie’s focus as a painter is to continuously explore the pushing and
pulling of color and of space and how those elements help to support the
intention of the painting. The landscape serves as a metaphor for what she
is feeling and the color is how she chooses to express or describe it. She
loves to explore the power that color has to influence mood and emotion. Her
goal is to leave the viewer with the experience of an emotional response.
As a
native of New Jersey, Julie has been painting her entire life. She earned
her BFA from Mason Gross School of Art and was a designer in NY for many
years. She worked in oils until she studied with Wolf Kahn and was drawn to
the immediacy of pastels-- their color and their vibrancy. Julie is
afilliated with Solaris Gallery in Califon, NJ and Artspace Studio & Gallery
in Morristown, NJ. She has art afilliations with the Pastel Society of
American, Connecticut Pastel Society, Pastel Society of NJ, Somerset Art
Association, and American Artists Professional League. Publications include
artwork included in "The Best of Pastel: and a feature article in the Pastel
Journel.
Julie is the owner of Artspace
Studio & Gallery, a working studio in Morristown where artists can
come together as a group to share creative energy. The studio presently has
pastel taught by Julie Friedman. On "Open Studio" days anyone can drop
in, pay for the day, and work in a community of other artists. Artspace
Studio also runs workshops throughout the year.

March 3, 2011 - Phylis A. Barfoot
"My passion for color, light, texture and contrast come from my
natural surroundings. The reflection of river rocks in a stream, the veins and
translucency of dragonfly wings, the richness of moss on ageless granite, or the
brilliant colors of ocean fish among a coral reef. I can’t open my eyes and not
be inspired!”
A resident of Sussex County, Phylis Barfoot is
a graduate of William Paterson University with a Bachelor of Fine
Arts degree with concentrations in painting and printmaking and an Associates
degree in Fine Art from Sussex County Community College in graphic design. Barfoot has spent many years studying the Art of Silk Painting

April 7, 2011
- Doreen Tighe

Doreen Tighe is an oil
painter who resides in Newton, NJ. Tighe paints primarily en plein air
(outdoors). She travels throughout Europe, Norway, Iceland and the Southwest
region of the United States, in addition to places all over northern New
Jersey. This is where she finds her inspiration and the subject matter for
her paintings.
Tighe’s love of art started
at a very early age. When she was just 6 years old, her cousin (now a
professional artist) asked her if she liked to draw. She responded “yes”,
but “I can’t seem to stay within the lines”. He assured her that this was
perfectly “OK”, and thus she began her lifelong journey of impressionistic
painting.
Tighe started her
professional career as a Fashion Illustrator. She graduated from the Fashion
Institute of Technology in New York City and later received a BS degree from
Georgia Southern University. She worked in New York City for 15 years at
various department stores and newspapers before deciding to devote her all
of her time to oil painting.
She is a member of several art organizations, including
the Oil Painters of America, the Master Impressionist Society, the American
Impressionist Society, the Art Association in Roxbury, and the New Jersey
Society of en Plein Air Painters. Tighe has received numerous awards for her
work. She has exhibited in many art shows and participated in several
painting competitions, including the prestigious Easton Plein Air
Competition and Arts Festival in Maryland.

May 5 - Ed Sprofcan

Edward J. Sprafkin is a predominantly
self-taught painter. He paints in a variety of media, including oil,
acrylic, and pastels. Drawing and painting since childhood, the
artist has always been drawn to the little things that many of us
simply overlook, whether it be the way the light falls upon an
everyday object or the many moods of the great outdoors. “Every day,
nature orchestrates a magnificent performance. My aim is to capture
these moments”, says the New Jersey native. When painting en plein
air, he strives to capture light and essence of the scene. He
instinctively sees art and beauty in spectacular views to the
simplest corners of a setting. Sprafkin studies the work of the
great masters of the past and also finds endless inspiration in many
of the masters of today.
Sprafkin is an instructor at the Center for
Contemporary Art, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and the Morris
County Art Association. He is a member of the New Jersey Society of
En Plein Air Artists and an associate member of the Oil Painters of
America. He is represented by the Design Domaine Gallery in
Bernardsville, NJ; Bucks County Gallery of Fine Art in New Hope, PA;

June 2 - Dannielle Mick

Dannielle Mick is a renowned artist who creates works
of art in all mediums. Her art is inspired by the natural world, featuring
sea, sky, and landscapes. She likes to maintain a sense of simplicity and
finds beauty in everyday surroundings. In her artist's statement she says,
“There is a story in the landscape which I am curious to uncover. However,
as in all great mysteries, I am deliberate in not giving away the
ending...so I keep my story minimal and intriguing. Using subtle tonal
variations, mixed with increasing color, I selectively provide just enough
information to pique your interest and invite you to further investigate
possible endings. Nature is such a tease...”
Mick attended the Art Students League, National Academy
of Fine Art, and New School of Parsons, all in New York City, as well as the
Chicago Institute of Art. She also studied with Wolfe Kahn, PSA, in New York
City and Elizabeth Mowry, PSA, in Woodstock, NY. She is a member of many

Society, Pastel Society of New Jersey, Ridgewood Art Institute, and the
